Remember how I said that you would need to get used to the flavour of the pentatonic before we were able to find the key of the song quickly? That’s what we’re going to start with – playing the pentatonic.
Play through this track with the correct position once through. Then play through with the root notes of 12 and 15, still with position 1. Notice how it sounds very close to correct, while still sounding a little bit out? That my friend, is the taste of curry in your delicious blues burrito. Get good at recognising it, or you’re improvising will be in the wrong key, and will suck.
A Minor Backing Track – Use the A Minor Pentatonic Position 1, root notes 5 and 8.
B Major backing Track – use the B Major Pentatonic Position 1 , root notes 4 and 7. Try it with 11 and 14 for curry awfulness.
D Minor Backing Track – Use the D Minor Pentatonic Position 1, root notes 10 and 13. Try it with 5 and 8 for more unwelcome Indian tasting.
